I started a new map and I your ideas. The map is about the war between Illidan and Magtheridon its heavily work in progress ,but im making it slowly. I think it will be 4v4 or 5v5 , maybe 6v6. The factions will probably look something like this:
Team 1
  • Red (Blood Elfs)
  • Blue (Illidan)
  • Green (Naga)
  • Brown (Gruul)
  • Player
  • Player
Team 2
  • Orange (Magtheridon)
  • Yellow (Master of Pain)
  • Purple (Mistress of Torment)
  • Maroon (Hellfire Citadel)
  • Player
  • Player

You could make a hero squad faction for each team, for example, Kagath and his clan were not numerous, only a few elite orcs left after the second war

You could as well make an evil faction just on the outland portals, which would be able to control demons and choose to reinforce from the draenor rifts where it's needed

Kael and his blood mages could also be a hero faction, and let BE be led by Liandrin Aewyn (or whatever she's called) and else like the ranger grill

If Evil would have kargath with few elites (as onyx said) you could make illidan and few demon hunters as one race to make things even

Do you want to make it with 2 teams?
Maybe there could be some neutral faction that can ally the bigger factions later on. For example Akama and the broken could be a neutral faction at start but can ally with Illidan later on.
Or give Akama the option to ally another faction (for example Shattrath if that is in the game)
Another neutral faction could be Majev and her forces. Although I dont know any possible allies for her.

Suggestion for the Illidan team:
Dont make them start out with their main bases that they have in WoW but make them like they just walked through the portal in Dalaran, so that they have to establish themself in Outland first before they can go on a real offensive.

Another neutral faction could be Majev and her forces. Although I dont know any possible allies for her.
If maiev would be in game she could ally Akama(who would be in illdari by default and could betray illidan)

Why not add Blood knights as a different faction from BE then after "X" ammount of time they could betray the team 1 and get some draenei units be reformed into the sun offensive i think the faction was called.
The blood knights could be heavy infantry units with support units that gives buffs or debuffs. They could lack range damage(as that could be the work of another faction like ranger corps) and when they betray they could get better range from draeneis4

Imo you shouldnt change your map concept. Adding hero faction will be for sure good idea, as long as they wont be half of each team. However I really not advise you to follow concepts of LTA (and etc), this map would work much better as pure 6v6 like WiP.

I made a lot of progress since the last time I wrote in here. The teams are set, some events are made , every race has a finished unit set , all of heroes are made
