The War of the Ancients

So after a while of working on and off on this project and with all the new lore and history WoW legion and the chronicle novels added to this time period. I have decided that i finally want to share my progress in hopes that It will motivate me to actually finish this map. It is a RTS similar to LTF AWLR with 10 players planned split into two teams of five with options to betray and switch sides or form new teams (Old Gods). The will have them battle over pre sundering Kalimdor streching from mt Hyjal to the dread wastes of Pandaria.

The Factions currently planned are as follow
Team Legion

Xavius & the Satyr (Red)

Reborn as the first satyr Xavius is responsible for the legions presence on Azeroth based in the city of Eldarath is one of the two on the legion team focused on conquering the western half of Kalimdor, Focused on defeating the wild gods which even queen Azshara feared and Malfurion to avenge his first death. The Satyr play as a twisted mirror of the druids corrupting nature and inflicting the curse of the satyr upon their foes to bolster their ranks.


The Highborne of Zin-Azshari (Teal)

Seat of the highborn capital of the Kaldorei empire location of the well of eternity Zin-Azahri is home to the most powerful and loyal of Queen Azsharas people a city which stretches from the coast of Eldarath to what would become the broken isles. The city of Zin-Ashari provides the bulk of the remaining army still loyal to the Queen as many of the distant cities and outposts have revolted or are to far away to come to its defence.

The Burning Legion (Yellow)
Base Antorus the Burning Throne.

From the broken world of Argus a never ending tide of demons flow onto Azeroth in order to subdue the mortal resistance that threatens the legions conquest of this world. While the mortals are of no threat the many champions and deities of this world will require the legion to commit many of its strongest leaders to this war which will require much investment and preparation.

The Queens Court (Pink)
Hero / Elite Focused Race
Only the most powerful high borne are worthy of serving the Queen and living within the Capital Palace Under the Command of Varo'then the queens personal guard and hand maidens support the war effort and ensure that the high borne remain in the legions favour.

The Highborne of Eldre'Thalas (Green)

Nestled in the forest of Ferelas the city of Eldre'Thealas remains unaffected by the war here Highborne magi study even the most extreme magic free from the watchful eye of the Queens court however such experiments have not gone unnoticed local lesser races have begone to attack distant outpost and repel attempts to study nearby holy sites such as Maraudon.

The Kaldorei Resistance

The Sisterhood of Elune (Blue)

All night elves prey the Goddess Elune non are more devoted than the Sisterhood of Elune an order of priests which watch over her most sacred sites and temples across Kalimdor after being driven from Zin-Azshari the leadership have gathered in the grand temple of Suramar offering support and healing to those who have suffered at the demons hands. Now united behind lord Ravencrest the Sisterhood will take an active role in the safety of Azeroth.

The High borne of Suramar (Purple)
The second largest city the empire Suramar provides great power and influence to its ruling grand Magistrix while so far untouched by war the destruction of the near bye academy and rumours of demons leave the people uneasy. While desiring to remain neutral in the conflict should the city be threatened Elisande will not hesitate to commit her people to lord Ravencrests cause.

The forces of Nature (Orange)
Hidden away in the remote region of Moonglade Malfurion disciple of the Demi God Cenarius has withdrawn from the war for a time to train aspiring students in the arts of druidism. While these gifts allowed Malfurion to delay the arrival of Sargeras without the aid of the ancients and dragon aspects defeat in this conflict is almost certain.

The Ancient Yaungol & Tauren Tribes (Grey)

Having endured the tyranny of the Mogu for millennia the newly free Yaungol have forged a home for themselves in the Townlong Steppes with the threat of the legion the Yaungol warlords have joined forces with their distant kin the embattled Tauren. United they have joined the Kaldorei resistance and seek the other tribes of their kin whose fate remain unknown.

The Kaldorei Resistance (Dark Green)
While many people and races fight against the demons only those under the command of Lord Ravencrest can be called an army. Believing that Queen Azshara is held against her will by her Advisor Lord Xavius Ravencrest rose up in rebellion, Wether there is truth to those words no longer matters as now his personal force at Black Rook Hold is bolstered by high borne and night elves from across the empire and is the largest threat to the legions conquest of Azeroth.

My Current Progress
The terrain is still being worked on however 3/4 of the map is done and it depends on how many areas i decided to add into my first version.
Work on the unit / building roster of each faction has started however no work has been started on the hero.

3rd times the charm, I guess. Good luck! Hopefully this won't end up like the 2 other War of the Ancient maps that died halfway.

For those of you interested and to keep me motivated as I get close to Christmas a quick update . While this image isn't clear it at least gives an idea of the kind of scope and layout of the map in terms of pre sundering kalimdor. (Forgive the giant broken isles) I have for the most part minus a few doodads to add finished terraining everything outside of the box in the image. In the bottom right corner is Argus which acts as the legions starting location and gives them access to gold / lumber without crowding the other legion members centred around the capital. Areas that currently blackend out especially in the south may or may not be used at some point.

That is WAY too much water made, tune it down just a bit :)

Much of the water is supposed to be rivers however i will tighten them by expanding mountain/shorelines and removing a few to make the map less blue as I perhaps stuck to closely to post sundering area boundaries.

why tanaris is a desert, also where the dungeons of the old gods and also why the well of eternity is so small

So a long overdue update delayed due to university work which will again likely delay how fast I can finish this map, The area which i had previously shown as unfinished is now done with the exception of two new areas that I have decided to add above the capital city and black rook Hold otherwise the unused space in the north would be intrusive. I do intend at some point to add areas of northrend the dragonblight and the borean tundra but they will not be included at release.

Work on units and heroes has begun again but is slow as its not something I am very confident in doing. Pinks heroes are done but in need of testing and balance which will need to wait until everything else is in place.

So having graduated university I decided to dust off this project and continue development the first draft of faction heros and unit rosters were lost when I forgot to make a backup and corrupted that file back when the world editor would screw with game text, However I have slowly redone everything on a older file and gone further with development with basic upgrades and at least two heroes currently done for each faction. The current plan is to add caster upgrades and design the faction elite units before adding in the remaining triggers then I hope to begin testing and balancing before adding the remaining features and content that I had envisioned when i started this project.

One change since I redid everything was shift the focus of the Tauren who now start with highmoutain and no longer have an inaccurate early thunderbluff and the sisterhood of elune who now have more holdings and bases in west kalimdor such as the cataclysm added city in stone talon. This felt more logical as the lore had the sisterhood migrating towards hyjal early in the war and having grey east makes more use of the oversized broken isles which comprise the east half of the map.

Hope to have something playable long before reforged releases in November or when ever it does.

Don't know if it will be done by August as real life / job hunting takes priority.

Glad to see the map not being dead. The whole concept is good decent terrain and a lot of content to be added to make it more fun. I think the main thing you should worry about now is to try and make each faction have a unique style of play. Meaning they all have a different way of doing things, which made the ltf/azeroth wars maps you are basing this on so popular even today. Good luck and hope you finish before Reforged hits!

I suggest you organize a forum game or hop onto discord and get people test it out! @Julian @Spampolice will help!

Update 02/11/2019 : After a enjoyable first test I have developed the map further firstly fixing all of the bugs and issues that were discovered but i am sure some still are hidden.
Within this tag is a record of some of the things I have worked on since yesterdays test.

Qol Improvements and fixes : Fixed the broken camera commands -Cam should now work for all players.
Added an Income timer to show how long between incomes.
Added more fountains around the map to allow free health regeneration at specific spots between players expected to fight as not every faction has access to easy health regeneration.
Added neutral shops around the map to sell basic items to each player such as scrolls and potions along with small attribute items.
Added popup text when players achieve the few events currently in the game and telling them what they received from said event.

Tauren Tribe Content : Added a reward for conquering each high moutain tribe (gold and structures).
Added re-searchable eagles air units upon taking the skyhorn tribe since grey will not gain access to dragons when added in later.
Added the First Path for the game and the first means of joining Team Old Gods which was the third participant in the war of the ancients.

Centaur Path : Allows grey to awaken the earth mother who resides beneath Maraudon turning all his assets hostile and gaining new units and Heros in the desolace.
Heros : Kolk the First Centuar. The Ghost of Zaetar and Theradras the elemental princess who is unlocked after a further research is completed.

Where are the Tauren are supposed to be focused around siege damage and weakening structures the centaur have Pillage which is supposed to support their economy as a current solo faction and encourage attacking structures.

Future plans for this path are to form an alliance with Deathwing but will be added along with the tier 3 Heros for all factions at a later time Currently I am working on tier 2 heros for every faction.

Yellow Content : Added a demi as a reward for destroying Macree added a research for the tier 2 hero Aggonar Who is a support pit lord hero with strong healing and battlefield disruption.

Edit : Forgot to add Orange Content : The tier two hero for orange is Cenarius the demi god who comes with mount Hyjal which can revive fallen ancients which come along side Cenarius.

Other Changes : Added a new hero for Teal in replacement for Azzinoth who was given to pink with Mannoroth moving to his intended place as a tier 2 hero.

Gave Red One portal of yellows in the capital to allow him to train demons there It was something which occurred unintentional during the test as one portal else where belonged to him but proved to be a fun little surprise.

Future Plans

I intend to host another test once I have added every factions tier 2 Heros and given them all at least 1-2 events to try and achieve during the course of the game.

After this test and the bug fixes and balance changes that will need to be made afterwards I intend to add the other old god faction planned the Naga for Pink.

Update 04/11/2019 Alpha Version 0.06

I attempted to host a test today however both battle net playing up and a previous engagement meant that didn't occur I will host a test of this version some point tomorrow I imagine.

Added Content and Features List

Red Content : Nothing Major this patch small base in ashenvale as an event and a ranged hero at the 10 min mark.

Blue Content : At 10 minuets blue may establish the warden order gaining Maiev as a hero and allowing the recruitment of eight wardens tanky melee units with magic defence and taunt to bolster there front line, Along with gaining a base south of Grand temple of Elune.

Teal Content : Nothing Major this patch added a new hero since the second satyr was moved to tier 2 hero unlocked at 10 minuets. Plan to add new content when i rework/ re terrain Blackrookhold and the surrounding area.


Purple Content : Added Grand Magistrix Elisande as the tier two hero spawns by the night hold.
Added a 15 minute research to gain a small outpost in the Desolace purple also gains a demi with a 4 person mass teleport allowing the demi to escape easily and support purples hero moving about faster.


Yellow : Added a small base spawn upon destroying the Grand Temple of Elune and small gold reward for both blue and yellow blue gets gold to help him recover the loss of his capital ( In later patches this will cost him a hero to be replaced with Shandris )

Orange : Added a small research to open the dream way portals which connect Moonglade with the broken isles after 15 minuets.

Green : Added a second tier hero the ancient from the dire maul dungeon melee with a lot of health to act as a tank since greens hero's where ranged and caster before.


Pink : Added Handmaidens ranged units that can be recruited after a research completed.
Gains Illidan Stormrage as a melee rather than caster hero upon Dark Green completing his 10 minute research to replace Azzinoth.


Grey : The tier two hero for grey is Ordos the Fire god of the Yaungol. Unlock able after the 10 minute mark he brings with him an upgrade for the Yaungol raider immolate for a small free damage to nearby units.

Dark Green : One event / Research added allows Dark green to replace Illidan with Rhonin and gains Broixar as his tier two hero.
